Swiss virtual reality start-up MindMaze has announced the acquisition of motion analytics developer Gait Up.

Swiss neurotechnology company MindMaze has announced the acquisition of Gait Up, a spin-off of the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV) and the Swiss Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), specializing in motion analytics technology. Gait Up's team will join MindMaze as part of the deal and continue to serve its existing customers until the end of the year while gradually working to expand MindMaze technology by adding and enhancing motion analytics and diagnostics features.

MindMaze has developed a revolutionary computing platform that combines insights from neuroscience and machine learning to deepen human-machine interaction. The platform captures brain activity upon intent and has a broad range of applications in the healthcare, entertainment and gaming industries. Combined with Gait Up's advanced motion analysis technology, MindMaze will be able to fully transport human movement to virtual environments.

MindMaze PRO, the company's groundbreaking upper limb neurorehabilitation platform, has already helped many patients across the United States reap the benefits of early intervention and higher engagement in therapy after stroke or traumatic brain injury. The platform uses customized interactive exercises and maps the patient's movements onto 3D avatars to activate new neural pathways and restore damaged ones.

Early research has shown that the MindMotion PRO increases patients' motivation and potential for motor function recovery and that patients' training intensity tends to double within the first 10 session of using the system. The MindMotion PRO was cleared by the FDA and made available to healthcare organizations in the United States earlier this year.

MindMaze has recently made headlines with the news that actor Leonardo DiCaprio has joined the company as an investor and advisor. MindMaze technology piqued the star's interest with the impact it has had on people's lives and with its potential for setting a new course for the way we create and experience content. The company is reportedly in talks with Hollywood studios, video game developers and hardware companies about licensing the technology to enhance motion capture or possibly integrate it into commercial consumer products.
